Sound-absorbing perforated sheets enhanced with embossed design patterns are gaining popularity across contemporary interiors. These panels achieve two objectives simultaneously: reducing reverberation and offering visual relief through three-dimensional surface textures. In settings like recording studios, backstage lounges, or even premium airport lounges, the combination of pattern, depth, and acoustic performance turns passive walls into active design elements.
Embossed textures influence sound scattering in the mid to high-frequency range, while the perforated surface (Ø1.0 mm to 1.5 mm) controls absorption through open area ratios and backing materials. Compliant with ISO 11654 standards, these systems are customized with motifs such as striations, grids, origami folds, and natural ridges.
Context: The theatre’s backstage was recently renovated to reduce voice overlap and improve sound check accuracy.
Challenge: Reverberant clutter caused by brick walls and a low drop ceiling compromised audio playback clarity during rehearsals.
Solution: Installed 136 modular panels with embossed ridge wave pattern, PVDF matte coating in warm gray, backed with 50 mm rock wool.
Results:
Clarity index improved by 27% in 1–4 kHz band
Post-treatment review published in ASA Stage Acoustics Bulletin
The panels are fabricated from 1.0 mm anodized aluminum or steel, mechanically embossed using precision rollers or press tools, then micro-perforated before being layered over PET fiber, wool, or recycled cellulose. According to ASTM C423, these panels offer improved acoustic performance when embossed patterns are deeper than 2.5 mm. Surface designs also contribute to low-light shadow effects, making them useful in hospitality zones with ambient lighting.
Design Brief: Create a quiet, visually immersive space using nature-inspired motifs and low-profile acoustic materials.
Execution: Installed 312 embossed panels featuring leaf and dune patterns in gradient pearl white and ash taupe. Panels covered wall alcoves and transitioned into the ceiling soffit with ambient light tracing.
Outcomes:
Peak dB during high occupancy dropped by 9.3 dB
Noise comfort index improved by 43% (surveyed via post-lounge interviews)
Documented under ASCE Quiet Aviation Interiors Initiative
Embossed acoustic sheets align well with minimal, biophilic, and industrial interior styles. Their adaptable coating options—ranging from brushed bronze to pastel matte—allow designers to integrate them seamlessly with lighting, signage, and wayfinding systems. Featured in Architectural Digest’s Material Trends 2025, they also contribute to WELL and LEED interior credit systems due to their low-VOC profile, recyclability, and functional role in acoustic comfort.
